Lucinactant (1st synthetic peptide-containing surfactant) (Surfaxin, Discovery Laboratories) approved by FDA for Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Premature Infants (infants born 6 weeks+ before their due date); alternative to currently approved animal-derived surfactants. 1 randomized, active-controlled, multi-dose study; ~1,300 premature infants = either lucinactant, beractant, or colfosceril palmitate within 30 minutes of birth. Primarily compared lucinactant vs. colfosceril palmitate; Lucitactant "demonstrated significant improvement in both RDS at 24 hours after birth and RDS-related mortality through 2 weeks" vs. colfosceril palmitate; commercially available late this year (2012)
