The American Academy of Neurology has updated guidelines for driving risk in patients with dementia. Mild dementia increases the likelihood, but does not establish, that a patient is an unsafe driver. A score of 24 or less on the Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE) is useful in identifying patients at increased risk for unsafe driving.
